Many of the meals are also vegan, vegetarian and/or kosher.

Healthier choices that we love include the lemongrass basil chicken and butter chicken. The Simply Steamers, Power Bowls and Café Steamers feature high-protein, low-calorie and fiber-rich ingredients. While not all options are low in sodium, selections like the grilled chicken marsala and cauliflower curry power bowl stand out as healthier choices. The Power Bowls also come in a couple of plant-based options, and all versions are high in fiber and lean protein.

We also like that this healthy frozen meal brand offers a range of types of dishes, from Asian-style meals to pasta dishes and comfort food favorites like stews and pot pie. You can also get Plated Meals, which include lean protein, vegetables or beans, and carbs like rice or potatoes.

5. Lean Cuisine

Lean Cuisine is a well-known frozen meal brand that can be a healthy pick for some eaters. The brand's main health-based selling points are that it focuses on portion-controlled and has many low-calorie options.

The menu includes over 50 meals, many high in protein, carb-conscious, gluten-free or meatless. Notably, a few meals, such as the apple cranberry chicken, carry the American Heart Association’s ‘Heart-Check’ certification, meaning they meet specific criteria for saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol.

While Lean Cuisine is generally a healthy brand, it's essential to check the sodium content on each meal, as some are higher than others. Some dishes are also a little bit more of a treat food, such as the fettuccine Alfredo or French bread pizza.

Lean Cuisine Overview

  • Dietary Needs: Vegetarian and gluten-free options.
  • Types of Meals: Pasta dishes, Mexican-style dishes, pizza and American dishes like chicken with Buffalo sauce.
  • Organic and Non-GMO Ingredients: Some use of organic and non-GMO ingredients.

Meals like the Buddha Bowl and Veggie Hemp Bowl provide at least ten grams of plant-based protein and some fiber, though some may need added protein for balance. 11. Trader Joe’s

The healthiest frozen meals at Trader Joe’s often feature wholesome ingredients and well-rounded nutrition profiles. What we love most about Trader Joe's frozen food offerings is the amount of choice available. From meat and seafood dishes to Trader Joe's vegan options, there's something for everyone, and many prepared frozen meals can be nutrient-balanced choices, depending on what you select.

Just remember to check the nutrition labels when choosing a healthy frozen meal from Trader Joe's. What sets the brand apart is the sheer choice, but consumers must be label-aware. Because the popular store also sells many frozen products designed to be indulgent treats, items may contain high amounts of sugar, salt or saturated fat.

One recommended pick for those who eat meat is the Chicken Burrito Bowl that packs 22 grams of protein and 9 grams of fiber, making it both filling and nutritious. For those who avoid meat, we rate the Korean Beefless Bulgogi very highly. We love to pair it with healthy stir-fried or steamed vegetables and brown rice or noodles. Best of all, a serving of this healthy frozen meal has 16 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber, making it a filling and balanced option.

13. Deep Indian Kitchen

Deep Indian Kitchen is our top pick among the many healthy frozen meals for anyone searching for authentic, homemade recipes that use whole ingredients and freshly ground spices. All the dishes are made from scratch, slow-simmered for rich flavor and ready in minutes, offering dishes reminiscent of home-cooked meals.

Additionally, many of the meals offered by this healthy frozen meal brand, such as the chickpea masala, are vegan and packed with nutrients like protein and fiber. Plant-based eaters can even get dishes like Chik'n Tikka Masala and there are vegetarian options with paneer, along with a range of chicken dishes that prioritize lean protein.

If you're craving take-out but want something a little healthier, this Indian food brand should be your new go-to. It's just important to check the nutrition labels. Notably, sodium content may be too high for some, with it ranging from around 500 milligrams per serving to a higher 1,000 milligrams per serving. Each dish also comes with rice, which may not be optimal for those following low-carb or keto diets.

14. Cappello’s

Looking for the healthiest frozen pizza? Cappello's stands out for its unique, grain-free crust made from nutrient-rich almond flour. This focus on premium ingredients makes it a superior choice among frozen pizzas for specialized diets like Paleo or gluten-free.

While Cappello's is pricier than some of the other healthiest frozen meals on this list, it’s worth the splurge when a takeout craving hits. Their options range from the whole-milk mozzarella pizza (offering protein and unsaturated fat from the almond base) to a plain crust you can customize.

Like all frozen pizzas, it’s crucial to check the sodium and saturated fat content on the label. If you choose a topping variety, remember to moderate consumption of those containing ultra-processed meats. If you love the brand's pizza, they also offer fresh pasta, gnocchi and ravioli, which simply need a sauce added to make a tasty and filling meal.

Cappello's Overview

  • Dietary Needs: Vegetarian and gluten-free options.
  • Types of Meals: Pizza and pasta.
  • Organic and Non-GMO Ingredients: Non-GMO ingredients and some use of organic ingredients.
  • Best For: Gluten-free diners and anyone looking for an alternative to takeout pizza.

15. Purple Carrot

If you want your frozen meals delivered each week without having to worry about going to the grocery store, Purple Carrot may be your new favorite brand. This plant-based meal delivery service creates nutrition-packed meals that even meat eaters will enjoy.

Options from this healthy meal delivery service range from sweet and sour cauliflower with farro and brown rice to plant-based meatball marinara to udon noodle dishes. As with some plant-based meals, sodium can be a little high in these, so always check the label to see if they work for your specific dietary needs. If that isn't of concern, you'll find that these tasty meals are packed with protein, fiber and flavor!

Purple Carrot Overview

  • Dietary Needs: Vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.
  • Types of Meals: Noodle dishes, pasta dishes, bowls and curries.
  • Organic and Non-GMO Ingredients: Some use of organic and non-GMO ingredients.
  • Best For: Plant-based eaters and anyone looking to try plant-based food via a convenient meal delivery service.

16. Milton’s

Known for crafting some of the healthiest frozen meals, Milton's Craft Bakers offers options that can fit a balanced dietary pattern by incorporating strategic ingredient swaps for classic comfort foods. Their pizzas feature cauliflower crusts, providing an alternative to traditional refined flour crusts, with some varieties offering the benefit of added vegetables or fiber.

This brand's gluten-free options don't compromise on flavor, making it a suitable choice for those with gluten sensitivities or celiac disease looking for the tastiest and healthiest frozen meals. Toppings include meat options like pepperoni or grilled chicken and bacon, as well as vegetarian pizzas such as four cheese, roasted vegetable and Margherita.

Be mindful of the sodium content, a half-pizza serving contains approximately 800 to 1,000 milligrams of sodium, which is a significant portion of the daily recommended limit. This intake can be managed by moderating sodium across other meals throughout the day. Additionally, the meat toppings are often classified as ultra-processed, which is a factor to consider for overall dietary planning.

  • Dietary Needs: Gluten-free and vegetarian options.
  • Types of Meals: Pizza

Are Frozen Meals Healthy?

Frozen meals have been around since the 1950s, when they were first introduced as convenient TV dinners. For years, they carried a reputation for being less nutritious because many options were high in sodium, added sugars and refined ingredients with limited vegetables or whole grains.

Today’s frozen food landscape is more diverse. Many brands now offer options made with whole foods, lean proteins and vegetables, allowing consumers to find choices that fit into balanced eating patterns. That said, not every frozen meal is created equal.

Some remain high in sodium, saturated fat or added sugars, making reading labels essential. The healthiest frozen meals tend to emphasize portion balance, fiber and a reasonable amount of protein while keeping sodium in check. Frozen meals can absolutely fit into a healthy eating pattern when chosen thoughtfully — especially those that include vegetables, whole grains and lean or plant-based protein.

How To Choose Healthy Frozen Meals at the Store

When searching for the healthiest frozen meals, prioritize two steps: checking the Nutrition Facts and reviewing the ingredient list.

What to look for in the healthiest frozen meals:

  • Nutrition: Opt for meals low in added sugars, saturated fat and sodium.
  • Ingredients: Look for recognizable whole foods, especially vegetables and whole grains, at the top of the ingredient list. Be mindful of heavy sauces, as they often significantly increase salt and sugar content.
  • Serving Size: Always verify the serving size, as some trays are counted as two servings.
  • Satiety: Choose options rich in protein and fiber to help you feel full and satisfied.

To maximize the nutritional value, balance your plate with simple additions. Pair entrées that are light on vegetables with a side salad, steamed vegetables or fruit. If the meal is low in protein, consider adding a quick source like tofu, beans, cottage cheese or eggs. Prioritize overall nutrition and ingredient quality over relying on marketing language.

There's nothing healthy about dextrose, high fructose corn syrup which is GMO, mono and dyglicerides, BHT, soy lecithin, canola oil which is GMO, xanath and guar gum, non-organic soy etc. All of which is in marie Calendar's Roasted Turkey breast and stuffing. Tasty yes. healthy? Not really.
