Cooking Class - Japanese Rice Bowl

What You’ll Do

Discover new ways to enjoy sushi rice with Chef Motoko.

Sushi rice isn’t only for nigiri or maki rolls but is a foundation for many meals in Japan. Chef Motoko’s recipes are based around the Japanese philosophy of soshoku, or frugal meal. Traditionally made up of a soup, a side dish and rice, this style of eating has become the norm in most Japanese households due to its health benefits.

Chef Motoko will guide the class in the fundamentals of Japanese cooking. Choose from a rice bowl or a hand roll and learn to delicately season the rice with salmon, vegetables and shiso leaf. Complement the dish with a savory miso soup cooked with Chef Motoko’s homemade miso paste.

Guests are welcome to provide wine and beer to enjoy during the class.

Chef Motoko's rice was perfectly seasoned--I had not tried brown sushi rice before and could not get enough! I enjoyed the practical and healthy adaptations to her traditional fare, and her warmth and eagerness to share her knowledge in the kitchen was delightful.

Chef Motoko prepared a delicious and healthy Japanese lunch for us. She sourced many of the incredibly fresh ingredients for the meal from her own garden. A few of the ingredients I had never tasted before and we loved the flavors. Chef Motoko helped teach us how to make a simple and flavorful sushi bowl as well as a very unique miso soup both of which I can’t wait to make at home. I really liked Chef Motoko who was personable with a homespun style of instruction that was very easy to understand.
