Cooking Class - Classic Homemade Gumbo

What You’ll Do

Learn the secret behind a classic New Orleans dish with guidance from Chef Kaia.

A New Orleans staple, gumbo is a classic dish that represents the blending of three cultures — African, Native American and European. It features ingredients that are easy to source in New Orleans, such as seafood, meat, vegetables and spices.

One of the stars of gumbo is okra. When cooked, it produces a thick, rich broth. The other must-have ingredient is dried and ground sassafrass leaves used by Native American cooks. Accompanied by Creole corn cakes for an appetizer, and topped off with bananas foster for dessert, this meal is a celebration of New Orleans culture and history.

Guests are welcome to bring wine and beer to enjoy during the class.

Kaia was inviting from the minute I walked in. Her restaurant is absolutely adorable and I loved the theme, it’s so playful! The setup for the class was perfect for a more intimate group or a larger one. The food was beyond reproach and the plating she showed was a lot of fun! Definitely an A+ for this instructor.
